Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonds in Amino Alcohols.

The amino alcohols, which have been the topic of this project, contain the functional groups -NH_2 and -OH at the two ends of a (CH_2)_n-chain. Due to their electronegativity, the atoms N and O can easily form hydrogen bonds to other molecules. For this reason, amino alcohols can be found as ligands in many polynuclear complexes with a broad spectrum of application in biology as well as in chemical technology. The focus of the current project, however, was on the interactions that occur between the two functional groups in the isolated molecule.

Highlights for 2-aminoethanol, 3-aminopropanol, 4-aminobutanol, and 5-aminopentanol are presented on the following pages. Each page is devoted to a single compound and contains several illustrative pictures of relevant conformers. Although most of the information is contained in the text, so that a text-only browser is basically sufficient, these pictures will help in understanding. Therefore, if your browser can load pictures, you might want to turn that option on. The bottom of each page provides links for forward and backward browsing and, in the center entry, an interface to the literature data base of the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry. Activation of this interface produces an up-to-date list of publications and theses that relate to the specific compound.
